Guys, just want to share my problem with the Gear Box for my 2009 Forester 2.5XT. My car is pretty new (1 1/2 years with a mileage of 37K Km). I did my regular servicing (not with MI but with a Subaru Specialist Workshop) every 5K and changed my gear oil on the 10k Servicing. Just 2 weeks ago, I discovered some weird sound coming from my transmission area. Note that the sound is not very loud and I am quite sensitive to sound.
Subaru did not warrant my warranty because they claimed that I had not done regular services with them. I sent my car to Kheng's Automatic Pte Ltd for a check and guess what we found? There is metal pieces found in the gear oil after the lower part of the gear box was opened. Kheng suspected that the gears insides the gear box had degraded some how and caused all the weird sound. They were very surprise that such a new car had this problem as his problem usually developed after 100K+ in mileage.
The Subaru Specialist Workshop's guy had some link with the mechanics in Subaru Service Centre and they were told that they already had a couple of Forester 2.5XT back with the same issues.
So I want to know if this is a known issues with the Forester 2.5XT? How many of you also have such issues? I will collect some data before I write to Subaru Japan to question on the quality of their gear box...
